Artist Statement

I create art to share the joy I feel when serving as an advocate for the natural world. Whether hiking, scuba diving, or traveling to remote areas, I strive to understand how our species fits into the larger ecosystem. Even though my inspiration is idyllic, I tackle serious issues, such as those associated with global warming, pollution, and the effects that human choices have on the rest of the environment. My work fits into the eco-feminism movement, critiquing the destruction of the natural world while simultaneously framing art as a driver of social change.

Through my choice of materials, I connect literary research, scientific experience, and artistic expression. I rely on traditional mediums- such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation- and nontraditional materials- such as algal cells, soil, and other biological material. When working with ecological samples, I follow scientific protocols for collection and culturing, which lends a performative aspect in my pieces.

By translating scientific information into the visual languages of painting, drawing, and sculpture, I create a narrative that people can experience and connect with. Although my work can seem critical, in the sense that it challenges viewers to analyze their human-centric understanding of the world, my goal is not to alienate people. Instead, I strive to educate and direct them towards long-term, sustainable environmental solutions and provide them with the tools they need to put those solutions into action.
